University Press Week Poetry Reading

Join us Thursday, November 17th at 7pm for a poetry reading in celebration of University Press Week, featuring Cheryl Boyce-Taylor, Ellen Hagan, Brionne Janae, and Simone White. Gabriel Cleveland will moderate.

CHERYL BOYCE‑TAYLOR is the author of four previous collections of poetry—Raw AirNight When Moon FollowsConvincing the Body, and Arrival—and a memoir and poetic tribute to her son, Mama Phife Represents. A VONA fellow and a teaching artist, Boyce-Taylor is the founder and curator of Calypso Muse and the Glitter Pomegranate Performance Series, and she has led numerous poetry workshops for Cave Canem, the New York Public Library, Urban Word NYC, and Poets House, among others. She lives in Brooklyn.

ELLEN HAGAN is the author of Hemisphere (TriQuarterly Books, 2015) and Crowned. A writer, performer, and educator, she is the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in poetry and has received grants from the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance and the Kentucky Foundation for Women. Her poems and essays have been published in Creative Nonfiction and Poetry Northwest and in the anthologies She Walks in Beauty,Southern Sin, and Women of Resistance. Hagan is the director of the poetry and theater departments at the DreamYard Project and directs their International Poetry Exchange Program with Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines. She coleads the Alice Hoffman Young Writers Retreat at Adelphi University. She lives with her partner and children in New York City.

BRIONNE JANAE is the author of After Jubilee. Their poetry has appeared in PloughsharesAmerican Poetry Review, the Academy of American Poets Poem‑a‑Dayjubilat, the Rumpus, the Los Angeles Review, and Waxwing, among other publications.

SIMONE WHITE is a poet and critic. Her book or, on being the other woman was published by Duke University Press in 2022. She is Stephen M. Gorn Assistant Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania.

GABRIEL CLEVELAND is the managing editor for CavanKerry Press. He is a poet and fiction writer and mental health advocate, working to raise awareness, visibility, and money for psychological and psychosocial issues.


This year marks the 11th annual University Press Week, and the theme is Next UP. This theme aims to highlight the dedicated work performed by those in the university press community to seek out, engage, advance, and promote the latest scholarship, ideas, best practices, and technology.
