Special Mirrors: Artists Writing About Artists

April 11, 2021 @ 12:00 pm1:00 pm

“If art reflects life, it does so with special mirrors,” Bertold Brecht wrote. Two novelists at the 2021 Festival feature artists in their latest books: the complications of being an artist, plus the glories of it too. Yxta Maya Murray’s novel Art Is Everything offers us a portrait of a Chicana artist as a woman on the margins. L.A. native Amanda Ruiz is a successful performance artist who is madly in love with her girlfriend, a wealthy and pragmatic actuary named Xochitl. Everything seems under control but is it? And in Jen Silverman’s novel We Play Ourselves, a young playwright flees to the West Coast, where she is drawn into the morally ambiguous orbit of a charismatic filmmaker and the teenage girls who are her next subjects.

In more than 25 years in the publishing industry, moderator and editor Tiffany Yates Martin has worked both with major publishing houses and directly with authors (through her company FoxPrint Editorial), on titles by New York TimesUSA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestsellers and award winners as well as newer authors. She presents editing and writing workshops for writers’ groups, organizations, and conferences and writes for numerous writers’ sites and publications. She is also the author of the bestselling writing craft book, Intuitive Editing
