Beginning with a 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial exhibit at the DuSable Museum of African American History, Lee Bey’s Southern Exposure photo series quickly became a focal point of Chicago’s architecture scene. In 2019, the body of work matured into a book published by Northwestern University Press, featuring writing from Bey celebrating the architectural heritage of Chicago’s south side and examining the factors that produce its relative obscurity in common narratives of the city’s built environment. In 2023, the book was transformed into Building / Blocks: The Architecture of Chicago’s South Side, a WTTW public television special for which Bey was honored with a Midwest Emmy nomination.

Now, after five years in print, the project comes home to the neighborhood of Pullman, where the celebrated photographer, journalist, and urban planner resides. Lee Bey: Five Years of Southern Exposure features work from the Southern Exposure project, including images not previously selected for display. The show includes photography from the original book, as well as updated images from sites that have evolved since the book’s 2019 publication. For the very first time, images from Southern Exposure will be offered for sale during the Block House Gallery’s fall show, with framed scenes from the book and limited-run prints available to the public.

The Block House Gallery is the home of PullmanArts, a neighborhood arts nonprofit bringing together arts & culture on the Chicago’s far south side. We believe that everyone deserves access to art, and that creators should be treated like family. The gallery, located inside the Pullman Artspace Lofts at 11137 S Langley Ave, is fully wheelchair accessible. The October 5th reception is free to attend, and food and drink will be available during the event.

Lee Bey is Architecture Critic for the Chicago Sun-Times, News Architecture Expert for ABC7, and the 2021 recipient of the Julius Shulman Excellence in Photography Award. His writing and photography have been featured in Architect Magazine, Architectural Record, Crain’s Chicago Business, Chicago Magazine, and elsewhere.
