Moving Men: An Evening of Poetry and Conversation with Award-Winning Poets and Cave Canem Fellows Kyle Dargan, Julian Randall and Clint Smith III

Dargan, Randall and Smith will read from their recent works and engage in an open conversation about the ways in which they attempt, as individual men and as writers, to actively sustain themselves within and evolve their understanding of manhood and masculinity generally and in the current sociopolitical moment.

Julian Randall is a Living Queer Black poet from Chicago. He was the winner of the 2017 Cave Canem Poetry Prize for his recently released debut poetry collection Refuse. He has received fellowships from Callaloo, BOAAT, and The Watering Hole and was the 2015 National College Slam (CUPSI) Best Poet. Julian is the curator of Winter Tangerine Review’s “Lineage of Mirrors.” His work has appeared or is forthcoming in publications such as New York Times Magazine, Georgia Review, and in the anthologies Nepantla, and New Poetry from the Midwest.

Clint Smith III is a writer, teacher, and doctoral candidate in Education at Harvard University with a concentration in Culture, Institutions, and Society. He is the author of the poetry collection Counting Descent, winner of the 2017 Literary Award for Best Poetry Book from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association and a finalist for an NAACP Image Award. His essays, poems, and scholarly writing have been published in the New Yorker, The Atlantic, the New Republic, The Guardian, Paris Review, the Harvard Educational Review and elsewhere.

Kyle Dargan is the author of the poetry collection Anagnorisis. His four previous collections, Honest Engine, Logorrhea Dementia, Bouquet of Hungers and The Listening–were all published by the University of Georgia Press. For his work, he has received the Cave Canem Poetry Prize, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, and grants from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. His books have also been finalists for the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award and the Eric Hoffer Awards Grand Prize. Dargan has partnered with the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities to produce poetry programming at the White House and Library of Congress. He’s worked with and supports a number of youth writing organizations, such as 826DC, Writopia Lab, Young Writers Workshop and the Dodge Poetry high schools program. He is currently an Associate Professor of literature and Asst. Director of creative writing at American University, as well as the founder and editor of POST NO ILLS magazine.

Doors will open at 6:30 pm. East City Bookshop will be on site, and a book signing will take place after the event.
