The Water Carrier

Steve Straight

Steve Straight's skillfully crafted poems cover a wide range of topics-love, marriage, family, work, and class issues. Not since E. A. Robinson has anyone captured the essence of the New England town with such keen observation. What gives this volume its distinctive voice is a Buddhist calm, tinged with irony and humor. Steve Straight touches the ordinary things of life with a magical whimsy and a delightful self-deprecating humor.

About the Author

Steve Straight is the author of four collections of poetry. A Professor of English and Director of the Poetry Program at Manchester Community College, he also directs the Connecticut Poetry Circuit and the Sunken Garden Seminar Series. He lives in South Windsor with his wife and two daughters.

"Straight offers the gift of an unsentimental understanding to whatever his alert, responsible, at times amused eye falls on. Let me be the first to say that The Water Carrier is a genuinely refreshing first collection." —Eamon Grennan, author of Still Life with Waterfall

"Capricious and compassionate, humorous and whole-hearted, these poems guide us toward each other, toward community. They relish life, they affirm it—they remind us how to live. This poet is indeed a water-carrier, and the poems are water. Drink deep and be refreshed." —Margaret Gibson, author of Icon and Evidence
